May’s GRC Member of the Month was a fiercely fought battle between the (fairly) young and not so young; the seasoned campaigners and the not so experienced. The nominees ran (or attempted to run) a vast range of distances from the relatively short 5K to the ridiculously long 100 miles. One even broke a World Record! Once again the weather played a huge part in the fortunes of our runners, with ‘the Beast from the East’ long forgotten and some unseasonably warm conditions making the going tough for many. As in April there were many superb performances from members who were not nominated who, in quieter months, would have definitely been in the running for MOM.
Coming late in May the Edinburgh Marathon takes place some weeks after the main bulk of spring marathon races and those who take part can get ‘forgotten’ when the hubbub of the marathon season dies down (The day after the London Marathon, basically...). In a month short on races, many of those shortlisted took part in the Folksworth 15 Mile Race, which will go down in history as featuring some of the worst race conditions witnessed in living memory. Andrew Pask, who ran a 15 Mile PB; Catherine Payne, who won her age category; and Peter Bonner, who raced well, despite suffering a nasty fall, were all considered. Peter was cited too for completing all four rounds of the North Midlands Cross Country League, including a strong showing at the season finale at Wollaton Park in January.
Hannah San Jose, who joined us in 2017, has enjoyed several months of continually chipping away at her parkrun PB, culminating with her current best of 22:11 run on January 20th, which places her currently #2 for 2018. Hopefully she can recover soon from her injury which has sadly sidelined her.
